India Magician Who Disappeared In River After Houdini Trick, Found Dead

A famous magician in India named Chanchal Lahiri attempted to recreate Harry Houdini's famed trick by jumping shackled into a river. He was tied up with chains and ropes and lowered by a crane into the water inside a padlocked cage. He never surfaced.

He was meant to escape and swim to safety but did not emerge from the Hooghly river in West Bengal state. Indian police have now recovered his body. It appears he drowned while attempting to escape.

“If I can open it up, then it will be magic, but if I can’t, it will be tragic,” he told the crowd. His family and onlookers waited on the boat for him to surface. Many other spectators watched from the shore, expecting a spectacle to be made by him escaping. He never did.

His body washed up about a mile down the river still tied and shackled in chains.
