(Lake George, NY) -- Howard Johnson's is gone. The last restaurant in the once-nationwide chain closed for good in the past few weeks. The restaurant was in Lake George, New York, a popular vacation spot in the Adirondack Mountains. In the 1960s and '70s, Howard Johnson's was the biggest restaurant chain in America with about a thousand locations on roadsides across the country. The chain known as HoJo's was famous for its orange roof and 28 different kinds of ice cream. The rise of McDonald's and other fast-food chains was the beginning of the end for the diners.
