A California appeals court ruling classifies bees as fish under the state's endangered species law.
The case goes back to 2019, when the California Fish and Game Commission classified bees as endangered but the following year, agriculture groups successfully appealed to the Sacramento Superior Court to have the insects removed.
The ag groups argued that bees couldn't be listed as endangered invertebrates because California's 1970s endangered species law defines invertebrates, animals without backbones, as fish.
On Friday, a state appeals court returned bees to the endangered list by noting that other non-aquatic invertebrates, such as snails, are already listed as endangered under the category of fish.
