Study Shows Muting Notifications Makes You Check Your Phone More

One piece of advice given to those that feel addicted to their phones is to turn off their notifications, but a recent study by Pennsylvania State University says that might be exactly the wrong thing to do. The study found that muting notifications can make smartphone users check their phones more, not less.

Another study published last month found that turning notifications off was the best way to cut down on phone use, but the Penn State team says that turning them off fuels “fear of missing out” and the need to belong and causes people to feel stressed that they’re not getting updates.
