Take a quick peek inside a grocery store this time of year and you’ll be overwhelmed by all of the pumpkin spice products available. Everything from dog treats to hummus comes in the “it” flavor of the season. So is it any surprise that pumpkin spice hair color is the hot shade for fall?

When the seasons change and the weather starts to cool down, warmer, cozier, rich foods and fashions are all the rage and the same goes for hair color, according to Kristen Fleming, color director at 3rd Coast Salon in Chicago. She explains that the shades are inspired by all things fall, “Think rich, earthy tones such as amber, burnt orange, butterscotch, pumpkin orange and soft golden hues, like the ones you’d see as the leaves change.”

But what is pumpkin spice hair color, exactly? Celebrity colorist Rita Hazan explains that the trend includes all warm, spicy tones of red and copper and can include a range of light to dark shades. And because it includes so many warm shades, it can easily be tweaked to look good on pretty much everyone, but it’s especially striking on people with fair or golden complexions and/or those with green or hazel eyes. Ready to get in on the pumpkin spice hair trend? These pros recommend showing your colorist a variety of photos for reference to make sure you get the right color for your skin tone and hair.
