The impression an 82-year-old greeter at an Arizona Walmart made on a customer led to a viral post on TikTok and a crowdfund of over $100-thousand. During a recent shopping trip at an Arizona Walmart, Liz Rizzo met Walmart greeter Carman Kelly. The two got to talking and Liz learned that Carman retired in 2004, but had to start working again after racking up $6-thousand in medical debt.
Liz wanted to help Carman, so she took a video of her and posted it to TikTok, where it was viewed over 15-million times, got over 2-million likes and more than 36-thousand comments. Liz also created a GoFundMe campaign to try and help Carman pay off her medical debt. The crowdfund quickly surpassed the $10-thousand Carman said she owed to two different hospitals and within a few days had raised well over $100-thousand.
A few days later, Liz delivered the good news to Carman that she was soon going to receive the money from the crowdfund, which is currently at more than $130-thousand. The octogenarian was shocked at people’s generosity. “I can’t even explain it. My life is gonna change so much," Carman says. “There isn’t enough words to tell you how I feel.” While Carman doesn’t plan to quit her job at Walmart, she is going to get a home that’s closer to her grandchildren and great-grandchildren and she’s going to cut back on her hours so she can spend more time with them.
