If the name “Barney” gives you flashbacks from your own childhood or that of your kids, you may want to sit down for this. Barney, the big purple dinosaur, is making a comeback. The singing T-Rex will be returning in an animated series and more, thanks to Mattel.
The toymaker is relaunching the Barney franchise with an animated series set to come out in 2024, as well as film and YouTube videos, and a line of toys, books, clothing and accessories in 2025. After being on the air for nearly two decades on the live-action kids’ show “Barney & Friends,” he’s been off the air since 2010, but that’s all about to change. According to Josh Silverman, chief franchise officer and global head of consumer products at Mattel, “Barney’s message of love and kindness has stood the test of time.”
Mattel is banking on the nostalgia of those who grew up with Barney, who may now be parents themselves, to make this reboot a hit. The toy brand recently relaunched their Monster High and Masters of the Universe franchises and both have been successful. They’ve already got more projects in development they hope will also drive toy sales, including movies based on Hot Wheels, Magic 8 Ball, Rock ‘Em Sock ‘Em Robots and even Uno.
