March 8th is International Women’s Day, a day to celebrate women, women’s rights and how far we’ve come with gender equality, while recognizing how far we have left to go. While there are all kinds of events you can attend this Wednesday, both online and in person, you can also add some girl power to your downtime.
These Netflix shows with women at the center will entertain you until you get back to smashing the patriarchy.
- “Orange Is The New Black” - This was Netflix’s first major feminist show and it tells the story of women’s lives behind bars over seven seasons. It can be heavy, but also hilarious and features some fantastic females, including Natasha Lyonne.
- “Grace & Frankie” - Hollywood legends Jane Fonda and Lily Tomlin are back together in this series, which throws them together after they find out their husbands have been secretly dating for 20 years.
- “Alias Grace” - If you’ve already watched “The Handmaid’s Tale,” you’ll want to check out Margaret Atwood’s other novel adaptation. This one is based on the real-life events of the 1843 murders of Thomas Kinnear and his housekeeper Nancy Montgomery, that sent Grace Marks to prison for 30 years.
- “G.L.O.W.” - A fictionalized story of the first all-women’s wrestling TV show, G.L.O.W. or “Gorgeous Ladies of Wrestling,” is full of 80s nostalgia, spandex outfits and a “sisters are doing it for themselves story.” And don’t forget wrestling.
- “One Day At A Time” - This reboot of the 70s sitcom deals with feminist, Latinx and LGBTQIA+ issues in a modern way, but with an old school feel.
- “Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt” - Created by Tina Fey, this story of a woman who escaped a doomsday cult and is trying to make it in New York City will have you cracking up.
- “Wednesday” - On days when you feel like wearing all black and giving the world the middle finger, Wednesday Addams’ teardowns of toxic dudebros is just what you need to watch.
