Barbie has been around for a long time and she hasn’t been held back professionally by being a woman. She’s had a range of 200 impressive careers over the years, including doctor, astronaut, CEO and even presidential candidate. And to celebrate International Women’s Day (March 8th), some trailblazing women in STEM are getting the Barbie treatment.
Mattel, the toy maker behind the Barbie brand, hopes to inspire and encourage young girls to pursue the fields of science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) by honoring these female STEM pioneers with their own Barbie doll. These global female role models include three impressive sisters from the U.S. and other women from around the world.
- Susan Wojcicki - longtime CEO of YouTube who was Google’s 16th employee
- Anne Wojcicki - co-founder and CEO of DNA testing company 23andME
- Janet Wojcicki - Professor of Pediatrics and epidemiology at the University of California, San Francisco
- Katya Echazarreta (Mexico) - electrical engineer who has worked on five NASA missions and was the first woman born in Mexico to travel to space
- Dr. Maggie Aderin-Pocock (U.K.) - space scientist and science educator
- Dr. Antje Boetius (Germany) - professor, marine researcher and microbiologist
- Yinuo Li (China) - Co-founder of ETU Education
Unfortunately, you won’t be able to buy these Barbies, as they’re one-of-a-kind dolls that will be gifted to the women who inspired them. But you can buy the Inspiring Women line of Barbies, which include impressive women in history like Dr. Jane Goodall, Helen Keller and Rosa Parks.
