His career is legendary no matter what angle you look at it from: songwriting legend, country icon, occasional pop star, and that barely scratches the surface of what Willie Nelson has achieved in his lengthy career. So while it's no surprise that "The Red-headed Stranger" was voted into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame yesterday, the shocking thing is that it took so long.
Fresh off celebrating his 90th birthday with friends on stage, Willie received the news that he was one of seven to be voted into the Rock Hall, going in alongside George Michael, Missy Elliot, Kate Bush, Sheryl Crow, Rage Against The Machine and The Spinners.
Starting in the '50's, Willie wrote many songs considered some of the greatest country songs in music history: "Funny How Time Slips Away", "Hello Walls", "Pretty Paper", "Crazy" and dozens more. As a performer, he helped establish the Outlaw country movement of the 70's; was a pop and country superstar in the 80's and by the 90's had settled into his role as one of the all-time greats in American popular music.
The 2023 Rock & Roll Hall of Fame Induction Ceremony will be held on Friday, November 3 at Barclays Center in Brooklyn, N.Y.
