Whether you’re seriously looking for a new home or just doing some “window shopping,” Zillow is the go-to for browsing houses. The real estate site is revealing their data-driven predictions for the hottest home trends that will be in demand in 2024.
To come up with the top trends, Zillow analyzed nearly 300 home features and design elements mentioned in sales listing descriptions, then they identified the keywords that appear a lot more frequently than a year ago. Amanda Pendleton, Zillow’s home trend expert, explains, “When certain keywords appear in a rising share of listings, it's a signal that today's home buyers may be gravitating toward those features.
Zillow’s top six home trends that will be in-demand in 2024:
- Brutalism - This design feature is “characterized by raw, exposed materials” and there’s been a 450% increase in listings mentioning brutalist design on Zillow. It includes blackened steel casement windows and raw concrete floors.
- Sensory gardens or pathways - Designed to engage all five senses, listings mentioning sensory gardens or pathways are up 314% from last year.
- Cold plunge pools - They’re a hot wellness trend for improving circulation and reducing inflammation and Zillow listings that feature cold plunge pools have increased 130% from a year ago.
- Pickleball courts - With the soaring popularity of the sport, it’s not surprising that this amenity in backyards or neighborhoods is in demand. Across the U.S., pickleball mentions in listings are up 64% from last year and New York City has seen a 100% increase in the sales listings mentioning proximity to public or private pickleball courts.
- Murano glass chandeliers - These colorful, handcrafted pieces of art from Italy are a designer favorite and the lighting fixtures are being featured 58% more often in Zillow listings.
- Murals - Forget bland walls, eclectic, statement-making murals are very in and have been appearing 18% more often in homes for sale on Zillow.
Trends on their way out in 2024:
- Shou sugi ban - This traditional Japanese wood preservation technique is done by charring the surface of wood to give it a blackened, weathered finish. It was popular in modern farmhouse design, but there are 69% fewer for-sale listings mentioning it on Zillow than last year.
- The “cloffice” - Office spaces created out of closets were a trend that became incredibly popular during the pandemic when everyone was working from home, but the “cloffice” is showing up in 54% fewer listings than last year.
- Tuscan kitchen - Bringing Mediterranean villa vibes to the kitchen also isn’t as popular as it was during the pandemic. Mentions of Tuscan kitchens are down 45% from a year ago on Zillow.
