For most of us these days, the digital world is our primary source of entertainment and new research highlights the amount of time and money Americans spend on streaming. And some of these numbers may have you rethinking your habits.
Forbes Home and OnePoll recently surveyed 2-thousand American streaming media users who engage with content for at least an hour a day and found:
- People spend an average of three hours streaming media every day, or more than 20 hours per week.
- Nearly all (95%) respondents pay for more than one streaming service, up from 85% in 2023.
- About half (49%) have three streaming subscriptions currently.
- A third (33%) have had to create their own streaming subscription during the last year after streaming service rules got stricter about sharing passwords.
- While 44% report an increase in streaming subscription costs over the last year, and 45% have canceled subscriptions because of rising costs.
- Surprisingly, 48% admit they have streaming subscriptions they barely use.
- Respondents say they’re most likely to cancel Disney+ if they hike prices or get stricter about password-sharing rules.
- As for the cost, people spend an average of $46 a month, or $552 a year, on streaming service subscriptions.
- Half (50%) pay more for streaming services without ads and more than half (56%) still use services that someone else, like friends and family, pays for.
- Netflix is the most preferred streaming service interface, which people like for its user-friendly navigation and highly intuitive design.
- Nine out of 10 of those polled claim they’ll cancel streaming services if higher prices and stricter password sharing rules are enforced.
