Your car’s “little black box” may be spilling info on your driving performance to your auto insurer. It turns out that GM’s OnStar, which helps in accidents and with diagnosing car issues as well as roadside assistance, is allegedly giving the info to data broker LexisNexis. They in turn hand it off to insurance companies. The “New York Times” broke the story and spoke with many car owners who have seen their premiums jump and the LexisNexis report is why. The Smart Driver service is optional, but it may still get info to the data company when you aren’t enrolled. GM denies that is the case despite LexisNexis reports knowing every trip every driver the “NYT” checked had taken.
