A new study has suggested, as odd as it sounds, that the “internet is disappearing.” By that, they mean that the idea of content “lasting forever” just isn’t so. New research shows that massive swaths of what once was on the internet is now gone. It now appears that 38% of the websites that could be found online in 2013 are no longer in existence, and 8% of web pages that were available in 2023 are now vanished. In addition, when it comes to references:
- 23% of news pages now contain at least one broken reference link
- 21% of government websites have the same link problem
- 54% of Wikipedia pages include a reference link that no longer exists
