A rare parasomnia disorder has transformed bedtime into an unconscious, high-stakes shopping spree a woman in the UK. Kelly Knipes, 42, has spent over $3,800 in bizarre middle-of-the-night purchases like a full basketball court, cans of paint, playground equipment and hundreds of Haribo candies. Knipes, who also battles sleep apnea, has even awoken to find herself unwittingly handing over financial details to scammers, as well as overdosing on medication.
With three special-needs children to care for, the Essex resident takes the anxiety-inducing disorder in stride, though she admits that “Everyone thinks it’s funny but it’s not. Some bits are, but some bits are quite serious.”
