Magnet Fishing NYC Couple Reels In Safe With $100K Cash Inside

A couple in New York City recently discovered around $100-thousand in cash while magnet fishing in Corona Park in Queens. James Kane and Barbie Agostini took up magnet fishing to fight boredom during the pandemic, using a neodymium magnet attached to a fishing rod to dredge up metallic items from the bottom of bodies of water in the New York City area. When they pulled up an old safe last week, they initially thought it was a routine find, having found lots of empty safes over the years.

But when the couple pried open this safe, they found two large stacks of hundred-dollar bills. Wanting to avoid getting into trouble with the law, they immediately contacted the NYPD, who verified that the money wasn’t related to any known crimes, making it the couple’s money free and clear. Some NYPD officers were surprised by the find, noting that such a discovery was unprecedented in their experience.

Although some of the cash was damaged by years of exposure to water, there is a possibility that the US Bureau of Engraving and Printing will redeem the bills if more than 50 percent of each bill is identifiable.
