A network of tunnels has been found underneath Ybor City, Florida, a suburb of Tampa, and no one seems to know why they exist. The tunnels were hidden for decades until construction projects started unearthing them. The tunnels are made of brick and tall enough to stand up in, and no one knows for sure who built them.
Dr. Gary Mormino, professor emeritus of history at the University of Southern Florida, thinks they were used to smuggle Chinese laborers and Chinese-Cuban prostitutes, and sums up the mystery by saying, “Why would you build a tunnel in an area that has a water table of about one foot below sea level?”
