It’s been in talks for years, but “Madden” is nearing completion, with Nicolas Cage set to play legendary football coach and commentator John Madden. The film will be directed by David O. Russell, known for “Silver Linings Playbook” and “American Hustle.”
However the film isn't a typical biopic or sports drama, but rather the origin story of “Madden NFL,” one of the biggest video game franchises ever. Madden, who led the Oakland Raiders in the 1970s and later became a beloved commentator, began talks with Electronic Arts in the 1980s to create the video game series that bears his name.
Russell wrote the script and has spent months trying to secure the right talent for his movie. Hugh Jackman’s name was also thrown around. In a statement Russell praised Cage as one of the greatest and most original actors, adding that the film will capture the joy, humanity, and genius of John Madden in the 1970s.
