Fruit enthusiasts have been flocking to Saskatchewan, Canada, in search of purple apples after an image went viral on social media and claimed they were a local delicacy. The original post, shared by Instagram user Unnaturalist AI, featured the striking purple apples and falsely claimed in the caption, that they originated from Saskatchewan. The fake fruit quickly gained attention across social media, prompting curious individuals to visit local markets in search of the colorful apples.
However, the photos were artificially generated, as confirmed by Rachelle Hofmeister, a horticulturist at Dutch Growers in Saskatchewan. She explained that while Saskatchewan has developed many apple varieties, none are purple, despite the viral post's claims. Hofmeister mentioned that her garden center receives phone calls whenever AI-generated plant images go viral, highlighting how easily misinformation can spread.
