The Best Wine To Pair With Halloween Candy

Now that Halloween is behind us, you may find yourself with a lot of candy in the house, and if so, congratulations. Whether yours is leftover from what you passed out to trick-or-treaters last night or you’re raiding your kid’s stash, the important thing is that you’ve got candy. And while you enjoy a piece or 20 over the weekend, you’ll probably want to know what to sip with those sweets.

Sure, you can enjoy a glass of anything with your candy, but some combos definitely bring out the best in each other. Consider this a cheat sheet to pairing wine with Halloween candy.

  • Twix + rosé or Champagne - The acidity in rosé and bubbly work well with the caramel and milk chocolate in a Twix bar.
  • Candy corn + prosecco or chardonnay - Candy corn is a divisive candy, people either love it or hate it. If you’re a fan, try enjoying it with some bubbles in a prosecco, or with a chardonnay.
  • Reese’s Peanut Butter Cups + merlot - As if these weren’t already the best Halloween candy, you can elevate that flavor by pairing them with a medium-bodied merlot.
  • Hershey’s Dark Chocolate + zinfandel or port - Thanks to the tannins in the dark chocolate that give it a bitter taste, you’ll want to find a red wine that’s a little sweeter for balance. A malbec or syrah will work well, too.
  • Milky Way + merlot - To make the most of the smooth nougat and creamy caramel in a Milky Way, pair it with a medium-bodied red wine, like a merlot.
  • Smarties + sparkling - Cut through that fruity, chalky texture in Smarties with the light, crisp acidity in sparkling wine.
  • Snickers + sauternes, cabernet sauvignon or port - With all the flavors going on in a Snickers bar - the salted peanuts, caramel, nougat and chocolate - a few wines pair well with it. A big, robust cab sav stands up well to all of them, as does a port. A sauternes will take it to the next level, as its rich, sweetness goes well with the peanuts and caramel.
  • Starburst + pinot grigio, sauvignon blanc, or riesling - All of these white wines pair well with all those fruit flavors.
  • Kit Kats + pinot noir - This classic Halloween candy is simple, but the crisp wafer cookies and milk chocolate go perfectly with the light fruit in a pinot noir.
