We make the lists and carefully plan every detail of our Thanksgiving feast, but sometimes things happen. Like realizing you don’t have any more butter when you go to mash the potatoes or that your whipped cream can is empty in the fridge (thanks, teenagers who used it all and put it back anyway!) right before you serve dessert.
Whether you forget something or just need more of an item, grocery stores get it and that’s why some of them keep their doors open on Thanksgiving. But even more frustrating than needing to make a supermarket run on Turkey Day? Getting there and finding out the store is closed. Looking at you Costco, Walmart, Aldi and Publix.
These grocery stores will be open on Thanksgiving, just in case you need them:
- Whole Foods - The majority of their locations will be open Thursday from 7 a.m. to 1 p.m. However, there are a few exceptions, including all stores in Massachusetts, Maine, Rhode Island and New York City’s Bryant Park location. You can check on your specific location’s hours here.
- H-E-B - the Texas-based chain will be open nice and early for those last-minute shopping needs. Their Thanksgiving hours are from 6 a.m. to noon, and you can confirm the schedules for stores here.
- Wegmans - Most of their stores will be open from their usual opening time until 4 p.m. on Thanksgiving, which is one of the latest closing times for grocery stores on the holiday. Some locations will be closed, including those in Northborough, Massachusetts; Chestnut Hill, Pennsylvania; Burlington, Vermont; Westwood, New Jersey; and Medford, New Jersey. The schedules for each store can be found here.
- Dollar General - The chain confirms that most locations plan to be open on Thanksgiving and their store locator can tell you what time a location closes that day.
- Albertsons - The majority of their locations will be open on the holiday, but many will have adjusted hours. You can get detailed information about their banner stores, including Safeway, Albertsons, Jewel-Osco, ACME, Vons, and Tom Thumb using their store locators online.
- Kroger - Many of them will be open, but with reduced hours on the holiday. Confirm your location’s hours here before you go.
