A piece of royal history just resurfaced: a time capsule buried by Diana, Princess of Wales in 1991 has been opened at the Great Ormond Street Hospital. The box, sealed into a wall with the help of two kids who won a TV contest allowing contestants to nominate eight items that showed what life was like in the 90’s. The capsule held throwbacks like a Kylie Minogue CD, a solar-powered calculator, a copy of "The Times” and even a pocket TV.
One staffer chosen to help with the unveiling laughed after seeing the 2-inch screen Casio TV430 pocket TV again saying it “brought back so many memories…They were very expensive then!” The capsule wasn’t meant to be opened for centuries, but plans changed when the hospital began demolition to make way for a new cancer center.
Both children who helped choose the items, then ages 9 and 11, would now be in their 40s, but the hospital says they lost touch with them and couldn’t invite them to the ceremony. Diana, who became hospital president in 1989, placed the capsule during a ceremony marking a new building at the hospital.
