Earth's Magnetic Field Makes A Creepy Sound When It Flips

Scientists have turned Earth's magnetic field flip from 41,000 years ago into sound, and it's pretty creepy. Okay, it’s really creepy. The European Space Agency's Swarm satellites collected data about this event called the Laschamps event. Researchers combined that with evidence from Earth and created an audio track using natural sounds like creaking wood and crashing rocks. Earth's magnetic field, which is created by swirling liquid metals in the planet's core, protects us from radiation.

Every so often, the field randomly flips its polarity, meaning compasses would point to the south instead of the north. During the last flip 41,000 years ago, the field weakened to only 5 percent of its current strength, letting more radiation from space hit the planet. It took around 250 years for the flip to finish, and no one knows exactly when it’ll happen again. You can hear the noise researchers created to the right.
