Penny Shortage Is Affecting Retailers

A penny shortage is affecting retailers nationwide, so if you’ve got some use them. The Treasury Department halted penny production in May and the U.S. Mint cranked out its last batch of pennies in August. Now, a growing number of stores and major chains including Kroger and Home Depot are reporting issues. The American Banking Association says up to 250-billion pennies are still in circulation, but notes some "localized supply issues." Here’s what to expect when paying cash without pennies: some stores are rounding the total to benefit the customer and others say not to expect correct change. If you have a stash, go ahead and spend those pennies.
