An amateur fossil hunter in Kentucky has dug up a mystery. Ron Fine, a member of the Dry Dredgers fossil club, found a huge fossil near Covington that measures nearly seven feet long and over three feet wide that he’s nicknamed "Godzillus." Fine spent the summer digging it out of shale rock, making more than a dozen trips to collect hundreds of pieces.
Scientists at the University of Cincinnati believe the fossil is about 450 million years old and came from a living thing, but they have absolutely no idea what it was. One guess is that it may have been a shrub-like creature that stood upright in the water, but the only thing that geologists at the university are willing to say definitively is that “we’re sure it’s biological,” which covers a lot of ground.
