THREAT OF ROADWAY ICE SUNDAY MORNING IN THE SHENANDOAH VALLEY
The potential for freezing rain and icy roads is present now through late Sunday morning. Rainfall is moving in across the Shenandoah Valley and Alleghany Highlands. Conditions allow for icing and glazing on roadways, especially in the central and northern valley as well the higher elevations of Bath and Highland counties. Bridges, overpasses and other elevated surfaces freeze before roadways.
Other areas in northern Virginia may also experience glazed roads. Check Virginia’s 511 system athttp://www.511Virginia.orgfor statewide road conditions, crash locations and traffic cameras.
The Virginia Department of Transportation advises motorists to avoid traveling until mid-day, when air and ground temperatures rise well above freezing.Ponding on some roads is possible from rain and melting snow later in the day.
VDOT crews are monitoring road conditions and treating roads as needed. Many roadways retain salt from previous winter weather on Thursday and Friday, which should help prevent ice bonding to road surfaces.
