An unnamed couple from Germany is suing a local farmer in a countryside south of Munich over the sound of cowbells and smell of manure. The married couple moved into a house near what was an empty field back in 2011, but it was soon leased to the dairy farmer, Regina Killer. Not only is this the second time they’ve attempted to sue Killer, but they’ve also filed a lawsuit against the local council for leasing the meadow to the farmer for her cows’ grazing.
Their argument is that the loud bells are unnecessary because of the flat land, suggesting that Killer use GPS trackers instead. But the farmer and her camp say that the GPS trackers are expensive and unreliable compared to the cowbells, – plus, the bells are part of her Bavarian tradition.
Killer has support from locals and the town’s mayor. Some residents agree that since it’s the countryside, farms and farm-related smells and sounds are a thing that people should expect. The mayor agrees, as well, adding that “grazing is a common practice in our area and is an important pillar of agriculture.”
