The timing of the National Costume Show segment of the Miss Universe Pageant threw everyone, including host Steve Harvey, off.
The idea was to reveal the winner of that preliminary segment then show off the costume of Miss Malaysia. Only, no one informed the contestant that the winner was going to be announced first.
That’s why Miss Malaysia was standing next to Harvey when he announced Miss Philippines, Gazini Ganados, as the winner. While the multi-talented host had referenced a blunder that happened during the 2015 pageant a few times, he used his comedy to smooth over this issue. For the second time, it wasn’t his mistake.
He quipped "Well… let me explain something to you. I just read that in a teleprompter, You all quit doing this to me. I can read this. They are trying to fix it now. This is what they did to me back in 2015."
A rep for the Miss Universe Organization confirmed that Gazini did actually win the Miss Universe 2019 National Costume competition.
