Dutch Teens Finish Trans-Atlantic Sail Home Forced By Coronavirus

A group of 25 Dutch high school students have sailed back into the Netherlands after the coronavirus pandemic changed their travel plans. They had been on an educational cruise of the Caribbean and planned to fly home from Cuba, but instead the teens, who had very little sailing experience, embarked on a trans-Atlantic journey, arrived home Sunday.

The 14-to 17-year-olds, three teachers and 12 experienced crew members stocked up on supplies and warm clothes before setting sail on the five-week voyage home. They covered 4,350 miles across the Atlantic Ocean on the 200-foot schooner Wylde Swan and were welcomed home by relieved parents at the port of Harlingen.

One of the young sailors, 17-year-old Floor Hurkmans, says the biggest lessons she learned on their adventure is “being flexible, because everything is changing all the time.”
