Brain-Eating Amoeba Found In Texas Water Supply

On Friday, Texas environmental officials told residents in several areas near Houston to stop using tap water, even for bathing, after possible brain-eating amoeba was spotted in the water. By Saturday that warning was lifted for most areas but roughly 58,000 people were affected by the advisory and long lineups were seen at stores as people stocked up on water. However, the Governor issued a disaster declaration yesterday for a Gulf Coast county where a 6-year-old boy died after being infected by a brain-eating amoeba and the organism was found in the water supply. The CDC notes that people can't get infected by swallowing water contaminated with the amoeba. Infections usually occur when it enters via the nose.
