Zookeeper Seriously Injured By 440-Pound Gorilla She Helped Raise

A gorilla mauled and attacked a 46-year-old zookeeper that had raised it since birth. The gorilla, named Malabo, actually broke through three safety doors to get to the keeper who suffered a head injury, chest trauma with multiple fractures, and two broken arms. This went down at the Madrid Zoo Aquarium in Spain and the victim was rushed to the Madrid Clinical Hospital in serious condition.

The Municipal Police of Madrid has taken over the investigation as it is classified as a work accident. They are specifically focused on how the animal was able to break through the three doors. Fortunately, the public had no access to the area where the gorilla attack occurred.

A statement from the zoo read: "The zoo team managed to remove the animal and later, the veterinary team anesthetized the animal with a tranquilizer dart, which was transferred to its interior bedroom and at the moment, it is calm." They also note that Malabo has been raised by his caregivers since he was born with a protective behavior towards the group and always acted very close to his caregivers.
