Before succumbing to ovarian cancer in 2014, Phadre Fitton of Johannesburg, South Africa, left her husband specific instructions to water the plants she kept in their bathroom.
Her husband, Nigel Fitton, diligently carried out the task for years, keeping the plants lush and green.
According to CTV News, in 2016 their daughter, Nicol, was helping her father move his belongings, which included his beloved potted plants, from his home to a nursing home.
While they were doing that, they discovered that the plants he'd been caring for all this time were plastic.
"Can hear my mum chuckling," Nicol tweeted.
Nicol and Nigel were sure that at one time the plants were real. But evidently, Phadre replaced her real plants with plastic ones after deciding that it was too dark in the bathroom for anything to thrive.
"None of us knew," Nicol told CTV News. "We all found it hilarious. Especially my dad who had been so impressed he hadn't killed them off."
She said that her mother had "a cheeky sense of humor for sure." "It's really made us all happy as a family to remember her like this,' Nicol said.
